Nothing Changed But the Name

A piece of work hung on a wall with no name under it, and people passed it like a window. Then it hung again, same frame, same light, with a name the room already loved. This time they leaned in, lowered their voices, called it brave and honest.

The harder part is mine. In an old notebook I found what I wrote the first time: thin, careful, nothing that stays. I wanted those words to belong to someone else, but they were mine.

Maybe for some the praise is real, and maybe a name only gives permission to stop long enough to see. The piece still hangs there, same frame, same light. I stop now and read the card last.
