You Took My Hand
Mara N.O.S
My head had been loud for hours, the kind of loud that only happens when everything else is quiet. I asked into the dark if she was still awake. She didn't say a word, she just reached back and found my hand.
It was never about sleeping. At two in the morning every big question folds down to the smallest one: are you there? Her hand was warm, mine is always cold, and she didn't even flinch.
Part of me will always want words, the plain out-loud kind, and maybe one morning I'll ask in daylight. But that night her hand was louder. Now when I wake at three I don't ask anymore, I just reach, and half asleep, every time, she takes it.
