For years the quiet felt like a gap in me, like someone who was late. So I chased every maybe, pushed too hard, called too often, stayed too long, and asked women I barely knew to tell me I was worth wanting. When it failed, and it always failed, I believed the gap was me.

That took years. Then one night the quiet stayed and nothing was missing. I still need help with my mornings, that never changed, but the nights no longer need rescuing.

The wish is still there: someone to share the quiet, not to end it, not to fill me, not to prove anything. If she comes, she'll find a man, not a gap. If she doesn't, the quiet is mine, and it can wait for her.
