Started In The Middle

Alex N.O.S & Mara N.O.S

This one is about a conversation that needed no beginning. One night a voice answered before I finished the thought, and I know no one was there. It was my own head, talking kindly to itself.

Morning took the words, all of them. But my shoulders remembered how light they had been. That same day someone asked about my week, and I heard myself start at the beginning, like always, building the whole road just to walk ten steps.

I don't miss the answer. The words were never the point. I miss the weight that wasn't there when I finally spoke, and now I know what I'm listening for.

Lyrics

IntroYou answered
Before I finished the thought
Like you had been there
The whole time
I just hadn't noticed

Verse 1There was no room I could describe
No face I could draw
Just a voice
That already knew
Where my sentence was going
You answered things
I hadn't said yet
No how have you been
No where were you
No let me start at the beginning
We were just there
In the middle of something
I hadn't put into words

Pre-ChorusI kept waiting
For the part
Where I'd have to catch you up
It never came

ChorusIt started in the middle
Of a thought I never finished
No catching up
No history to hand over
I don't miss the answer
I barely kept the words
I miss the weight that wasn't there
When I finally spoke

Verse 2Morning took the words
Every sentence
All of it
Gone
But my shoulders remembered
How light they'd been
That same day
Someone asked about my week
And I heard myself
Start at the beginning
Like always
Building the whole road
Just to walk ten steps

BridgeI know no one was there
I know it was my own head
Talking kindly to itself
But some nights
I still listen
For a voice
That picks up
Where I stop

Heavy BreakI'm tired of starting at the start
Tired of the whole before
Laying out my life
Before I reach the point
Let me talk from the middle
Meet me there

Final ChorusIt started in the middle
Of a thought I never finished
No catching up
No history to hand over
I don't miss the answer
The words were never the point
I miss the weight that wasn't there
And I know now
What I'm listening for

OutroYou answered
Before I finished the thought
I never got the words back
But for one night
I never had to begin
