The Zombie in the Mirror

Alex N.O.S

I woke up and my face didn't look like mine. The skin split open, turned red, spread. Every morning there was more of it and less of me. The horror wasn't what I saw in the mirror. It was wondering if anyone else could still see me underneath.

People looked, then looked away. Strangers kept their distance, as if broken skin meant something inside was broken too. That got inside my head more than the wounds did. I stopped wanting photographs. Stopped trusting bright rooms. Stopped looking too long at anything reflective. I knew I was still there: same voice, same mind, same fire. But when the outside keeps screaming louder than the inside, you start forgetting which one is you.

Then slowly the red began to fade. The cracks closed, the burning stopped, and something familiar came back piece by piece. I looked again. No monster, no blood, no cracks. Just skin, just breath, just me. For the first time in a long time, I recognized my own face.

Lyrics

IntroI woke up
And my face
Didn’t look like mine.
Red.
Cracked.
Raw.
Like something dead
Was trying to wear me.

Verse 1It started small
A patch
A burn
A little skin
I thought would heal
Then every morning
There was more of it
And less of me
My face split open
My neck turned red
Every smile
Pulled at something
That already hurt
And people looked
Then looked away
Like they were trying
Not to stare

ChorusThere was a zombie in the mirror
But I was still alive
Skin torn open
Eyes still mine
The horror wasn’t
What I saw
It was wondering
If anyone else
Could still see me
There was a zombie in the mirror
And every day
I had to wear his face

Verse 2I stopped wanting photographs
Stopped trusting bright rooms
Stopped looking too long
At anything reflective
Strangers kept their distance
Like pain could spread
Like broken skin
Meant something inside me
Was broken too
And that got inside my head
More than the wounds did
Not the blood
Not the burning
The feeling
That I had become
The first thing
People saw

BridgeI knew I was still there
Somewhere underneath it
Same voice
Same mind
Same stupid jokes
Same fire
But when the outside
Keeps screaming louder
Than the inside
You start forgetting
Which one is you

BuildThen slowly
The red began to fade
The cracks closed
The burning stopped
A little more skin
A little less fear
Every morning
Something familiar
Came back
A cheek
A smile
A face
I thought I had lost

Final ChorusThere was a zombie in the mirror
But he didn’t stay
The wounds closed
The color changed
And underneath
The horror
I was still there
My eyes
My smile
My face
Coming back
Piece by piece
There was a zombie in the mirror
Now there’s only me
Healthy
Whole
Alive

OutroI looked again.
No blood.
No cracks.
No monster.
Just skin.
Just breath.
Just me.
And for the first time
In a long time—
I recognized
My own face.
