For years I performed my own life. I rehearsed being spontaneous in bathroom mirrors and held the pose like a job. Then you came along and never rehearsed a thing: wrong words sung louder, thanks given to the cash machine, a little bow when the parking worked, never once checking who was watching.

Watching you get it wrong, I put the performance down, and when it came back at your friend's birthday, one look across the room was enough to let the polished one go. I was a little jealous at first, then I wasn't. I hate that I needed you to go first, but I did.

Somewhere along the way it turned around. When the room goes stiff and you go quiet in it, I go first now. I don't watch from the doorway anymore.
